Data Protection in the Modern Data Center

Data protection has always been a key task for IT professionals. In the past, methodologies have not changed much; grandfather-father-son backup procedures and tape-based systems have been a mainstay for most data centers.

In the last decade, though, the data center has changed dramatically. In particular, virtualization has created a layer of abstraction between logical computing resources and the physical devices underpinning them, leading to a more dynamic, flexible computing environment. As more of the data center’s functionality slips from hardware to software, data protection procedures have changed—and data center managers are forced to adapt.

Although virtualization has created larger data volumes and headaches for backup administrators, it also brings opportunities for more efficient, easily-manageable data protection procedures.
