Q: Can I back up data from a Windows client to Azure?

A: Microsoft has released an update for Azure Backup that adds support for Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 8.1. This enables Windows clients to back up data to Azure Backup vaults. The update is available at "Azure Backup now supports 64-bit editions of Windows client operating systems." After the update is installed, launch the Microsoft Azure Backup client and perform the following steps:

  1. Select the Register Server action.

  2. Select whether a proxy server is required for connection to Azure; click Next.

  3. Select a vault credential file. This is obtained through the vault Quick Start page in the Azure portal by selecting the Download vault credentials action, as the following figure shows.

Once the downloaded file is selected in the Register Server wizard, the vault and region of the vault are shown. Click Next.

  4. You need to select the method to be used for data encryption in Azure. Either enter a passphrase or allow the wizard to autogenerate one, then ensure that you save the passphrase to a file. If you lose this passphrase, you won't be able to retrieve the data from the vault. Click the Register button.

  5. A confirmation page will display, indicating that backup is available, along with confirmation of the file name where the passphrase was saved. Click Close.

You can now proceed to configure a backup schedule via the Schedule Backup action. Notice that there's also an option to recover data.
