Codice Offers Free Version of Plastic SCM, Aimed at Small Dev Teams

Codice Software, developer of the Plastic SCM software configuration and change management system, has released a free Community Edition of the product. By offering the Community Edition, Codice hopes to entice developers on small teams, who often work remotely or are dispersed geographically, to reap the benefits of using a distributed version control system (DVCS) in a distributed development scenario. The Community Edition, which is a full-featured version of Plastic SCM, is available for free for up to 15 users, and Codice encourages its use for small development projects.

"In the current economic situation, there are a large number of small [development] teams that don't want to spend a lot of money on tools. But as a result, they don't get the best of modern techniques," said Pablo Santos, Codice CEO. "With the Plastic SCM Community Edition, we help them move to distributed development with a free product meant for small teams."

According to Santos, a key differentiator of Plastic SCM from other DVCS products is that many of these--such as the Git or Mercurial open source DVCSs--are Linux-based, command-line tools, whereas Plastic SCM is a GUI-based tool, designed for Windows developers. Additionally, Plastic SCM is integrated into Visual Studio via a Visual Studio integration package. "It is really a tool designed for GUI users and includes our second generation of Visual Studio integration," said Santos.
