This week's questions cover topics for Exam 70-215: Installing, Configuring, and Administering Microsoft Windows 2000 Server.
Questions (August 3, 2001)
Question 1
As you migrate to Windows 2000, you must consider whether you want to make resources available to your users through Active Directory (AD). AD lets users locate resources with specific attributes.
On your network, you have a Win2K Server machine that's a member of an AD domain named acme.com. You decide to install a printer named HPLaser5 on the server. You also decide to share a folder named AcctInfo. Assuming the default AD settings, which of the following statements are correct?
The system will publish the printer and the shared folder in AD.
The system will publish the printer in AD; you must manually publish the shared folder in AD.
The system will publish the shared folder in AD; you must manually publish the printer in AD.
The system will publish neither the printer nor the shared folder in AD; you must manually publish both in AD.
Question 2
Basic disks and dynamic disks differ in the number of partitions (on basic disks) and volumes (on dynamic disks) that each can contain. Which of the following statements about basic and dynamic disks is correct?
Basic disks can contain a maximum of two partitions; dynamic disks can contain a maximum of four volumes.
Basic disks can contain a maximum of two partitions; dynamic disks can contain an unlimited
number of volumes.
Basic disks can contain a maximum of four partitions; dynamic disks can contain a maximum of 24 volumes.
Basic disks can contain a maximum of four partitions; dynamic disks can contain an unlimited number of volumes.
Basic disks can contain an unlimited number of partitions; dynamic disks can contain a maximum of four volumes.
Question 3
You want to make certain that you back up the contents of each of your company's My Documents folders, so you use Group Policy to configure Folder Redirection, pointing your users' My Documents folders to a computer named FS-CHI-9. To secure their documents, you then use Encrypting File System (EFS) to encrypt each of your users' My Documents folders on FS-CHI-9. However, after you complete the encryption, your users complain that they receive Access Denied error messages when they attempt to access their folders. What's the most likely explanation for this problem?
Because you encrypted the My Documents folders locally on FS-CHI-9, the private encryption keys reside on that machine. Your users can't access the encrypted folders from their local workstations because their machines don't contain the private encryption keys.
Folder redirection and file encryption are mutually exclusive. Your users receive error messages because you have attempted to encrypt folders that you have already redirected.
Your users can't gain access to their My Documents folders because only the person who encrypts a folder can gain access to it.
When you encrypted the My Documents folder, you changed the NTFS permissions on the folder. NTFS permissions, not folder encryption, are preventing your users from accessing their My Documents folders.
Answers (August 3, 2001)
Answer to Question 1
The correct answer is B—The system will publish the printer in AD; you must manually publish the shared folder in AD. By default, Windows 2000 printers appear in AD. Shared folders don't appear in AD unless you add them.
Answer to Question 2
The correct answer is D—Basic disks can contain a maximum of four partitions; dynamic disks can contain an unlimited number of volumes. On basic disks, you can have four primary partitions or a maximum of three primary partitions and an extended partition. The extended partition can contain multiple logical drives. Dynamic disks can contain an unlimited number of volumes.
Answer to Question 3
The correct answer is C—Your users can't gain access to their My Documents folders because only the person who encrypts a folder can gain access to it. EFS doesn't support file sharing. To avoid problems, you should instruct your users to encrypt their own My Documents folders. A better solution would be to use NTFS permissions to secure the documents. Because all the files reside on a network server, the physical security of the computer isn't vulnerable and EFS isn't critical.
