This is word art reading "Cyber Crime"

Security and the protection of data are very hot topics in the modern IT business.

All you have to do is read through the headlines each week to hear about a new data breach or that ransom ware has caught someone else unprepared.

These issues should be at the forefront of every IT Pro's mind as they conduct their daily tasks and business plus, when it comes to IT leadership, security must top the list as new processes and systems are being designed for roll out.

Of course, another thing that can help us all along this sometimes treacherous path is to learn from leaders and experts in the field so that we can be even better prepared and informed.

Yesterday, I summarized some of the great content that came out of the 2016 RSA Conference in San Francisco last week and now I want to make you aware of a free three hour session from Microsoft that is being offered later this month that is focused on security - specifically cyber-crime.

The Microsoft Virtual Security Summit will be held from 9 AM 10 12 PM (PST) on Tuesday, March 29th and will focus on helping to protect your organizations from security threats and cyber crime.

At this event, you’ll learn about modern cybercriminals and their evolving tactics, the tools you can use to keep your people, platforms, and devices safe, and much more.

According to Microsoft, security has become more challenging for three reasons:

  • Cybercrinminals have evolved. They have become better organized and are using more sophisticated techniques.

  • Enterprise security has failed to keep up. Traditional security measures are proving largely ineffective and attackers are exploiting gaps between disconnected point solutions.

  • The cost is high. Cyberattacks cost organizations $400 billion a year. This makes cybersecurity a boardroom problem.

Registration for the free event is already open and you can add a handy calendar reminder once you are done.

But, wait...there's probably more so be sure to follow me on Twitter and Google+.

I served for 29 plus years in the U.S. Navy and retired as a Master Chief Petty Officer in November 2011. My work background in the Navy was telecommunications related so my hobby of computers fit well with what I did for the Navy. I consider myself a tech geek and enjoy most things in that arena.

My first website – AnotherWin95.com – came online in 1995. Back then I used GeoCities Web Hosting for it and WindowsObserver.com is the result of the work I have done on that site since 1995.

In January 2010 my community contributions were recognized by Microsoft when I received my first Most Valuable Professional (MVP) Award for the Windows Operating System. Since then I have been renewed as a Microsoft MVP each subsequent year since that initial award. I am also a member of the inaugural group of Windows Insider MVPs which began in 2016.

I previously hosted the Observed Tech PODCAST for 10 years and 317 episodes and now host a new podcast called Faith, Tech, and Space.

I began contributing to Penton Technology websites in January 2015 and in April 2017 I was hired as the Senior Content Producer for Penton Technology which is now Informa Tech. In that role, I contribute to ITPro Today and cover operating systems, enterprise technology, and productivity.
