Appcelerator, maker of the Titanium cloud platform, launches Open Mobile Marketplace
Appcelerator is complementing its Titanium platform for building tablet and desktop apps with the Appcelerator Open Mobile Marketplace, a store where third parties can help stock shelves.
September 20, 2011
Appcelerator, the mobile cloud platform for developing native mobile desktop and tablet apps, officially opened the doors of its Open Mobile Marketplace yesterday. The virtual shop offers a place for third-party vendors to sell native and HTML5 mobile modules, mobile cloud services, application templates and design elements.
At launch, 50 software solutions are stocking the shelves from vendors including PayPal, Salesforce, AdMob, Bump, DoubleClick and Adobe's Omniture, as well as gaming modules from Gamekit and OpenGL.
Appcelerator's popular Titanium platform, which supports open Web standards and features more than 3,600 native features, helps enable developers to build single solutions for use across multiple operating systems, including iOS and Android.
With more than 1.5 million developers populating Appcelerator's community, Scott Ellison, a VP with analysis firm IDC, called the new Marketplace an "enormous opportunity for anyone looking to scale their business by leveraging the power of its ecosystem."
Any developer can publish native or HTML5 mobile modules, app templates or mobile cloud services in the Marketplace, and there are self-service tools for uploading content, integrating with existing subscription services, and promoting and maintaining offerings. Offers may be free or paid, though Appcelerator takes a 30% share of paid-for content.
With more than 25,000 mobile apps being used by more than 20 million users, Appcelerator's is the largest cross-platform developer ecosystem.
"The future of enterprise mobility won't be owned by any one platform, which means that vendors need to deliver an unparalleled experience across all devices," Aaron Levie, CEO of Box, said in a statement for Appcelerator.
Also clued in on the evolving enterprise space, Verizon this month opened a cross-platform, multiple-device shop from which enterprise customers can offer and manage applications, the Verizon Private Applications Store for Business. On Sept. 29 from 9 - 10 a.m. (PDT), Appcelerator will offer a Web cast on how the Marketplace hopes to help improve apps and grow revenue.
Appcelerator introduced its new Marketplace from its Codestrong Developer Conference in San Francisco. The event includes a Hackathon contest that concludes today and features a first place prize of $10,000 for the most innovative mobile apps for iOS, Android and BlackBerry platforms.
