For developers sizing up mobile platforms, here’s the latest data: Apple is still the lead dog in terms of single phone and single phone-maker, but the multitude of Android devices have combined to take a growing market lead.
Combined, Android-running smartphones today dominate ad impressions by mobile operating system, accounting for 54% compared to iOS's 28% and RIM's 13%, according to new market numbers from Millennial Media.
Android is also ahead in apps now, grabbing a 49% share to Apple's 41% -- something of a surprise given Apple’s once sizeable app lead.
Other findings in the report of interest to mobile developers:
Smartphones accounted for 72% of all device ad impressions, while feature phones and connected devices took equal 14% slices of the pie.
Touch screen input, growing 2% month over month, is by the far the most popular input method, with a 63% market share, compared to 16% for the combined touch and QWERTY and 11% for QWERTY only.
While the LG Optimus was the second most-popular phone, HTC, which has five smartphones in the top-20 phones list (the Desire, Evo, Droid Incredible, MyTouch 4G Glacier and Thunderbolt) grabbed second place in the top manufacturers list, with a 16.3% share. Samsung followed in third, with 14.6%, followed by Motorola, with 11.4%, and RIM, with 11.1%.
