Q: How can I migrate virtual machines from Amazon Web Services to Microsoft Azure?

A: Amazon Web Services (AWS) allows you to download virtual machines from their service, which you could then convert for Hyper-V use and upload to Azure. However, this would involve a lengthy down time of the service during the download, conversion, and upload. A better solution would be to use the free Microsoft Migration Accelerator, which uses the same technology as Azure Site Recovery—which is based on the InMage Scout technology. The technology works by running a collector inside the source OS that captures changes to the disk and then sends these writes to the target OS through a number of components. For more information about how InMage Scout works, see my FAQ "InMage Scout." The source OS can be running on anything: physical hardware, VM, or other cloud services. The collecting agent doesn't care.
