Google Stackdriver Consolidates Monitoring of Apps in AWS and Google Cloud Services

Stackdriver is a company that started up back in 2012 to address the challenges businesses had in monitoring their various apps and other services on Amazon Web Services (AWS).

Last year, Google acquired them with the plan for that tool to be expanded so that it included monitoring Google's own cloud services for customers.

Today, during Google's Cloud Platform Global User Conference, GCPNEXT16, they officially announced the release of this new service in beta for their customers.

The Stackdriver service's goal is to provide IT Pros and organizations that are using Amazon and Google for their cloud services the ability to monitor, log and perform diagnostics across both of those platforms in one central portal.

Highlights of the services capabilities include:

  • Monitor Google Cloud, AWS or any mix of the two

  • Quick startup uses defaults that give you fats access to monitoring

  • Data is displayed visually to help you identify trends and hotspots that need your attention

  • Alerts can be pushed to services like Slack and PagerDuty for immediate response

  • Still maintain access to all of your logs and other data so that you can identify issues in greater detail

  • Auto-scaling and distributed systems work right alongside of your architecture

Specific features listed for Stackdriver include:

  • Debugger

  • Error Reporting

  • Rapid Discovery

  • Uptime Monitoring

  • Integration

  • Alerts

  • Tracing

  • Logging

  • Dashboards

Currently Stackdriver is being offered at no cost while it is in beta and final pricing will be available sometime in the future.

You can read more about Stackdriver on its Google Cloud Platform homepage and also watch the video below for a brief introduction to the ideas behind the service from the Stackdriver developers and product team themselves.
