JSI Tip 7983. Your Active Directory clients record event IDs 1030 and 1058?

Your directory service clients frequently record the following events when the DFS (Distributed File System) service is NOT started on a Windows 2000 domain controller:

Event Type: Error Event Source: Userenv Event Category: None Event ID: 1030 Description: Windows cannot query for the list of Group Policy objects.              A message that describes the reason for this was previously logged by the policy engine.              For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.Event Type: Error Event Source: Userenv Event Category: None Event ID: 1058 Description: Windows cannot access the file gpt.ini for GPO              CN={31B2F340-016D-11D2-945F-00C04FB984F9},CN=Policies,CN=System,DC=domain,DC=com.             The file must be present at the location              <\domainsysvoldomainPolicies\{31B2F340-016D-11D2-945F-00C04FB984F9}gpt.ini>.             (The network path was not found. ). Group Policy processing aborted.              For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

NOTE: When accessing the domainsysvol folder, you receive access denied or network path not found, even thought permissions on the sysvol folder are correct.

To resolve this problem:

1. On the Windows 2000 domain controller where the DFS service is not started, use Start / Run / Services.msc / OK.

2. Double-click Distributed File System.

3. Select the General tab.

4. Toggle Startup type to Automatic and press Apply.

5. Press the Start button.

6. Press OK and close the Services window.
