Q. If I install the Windows Server 2008 R2 release candidate (RC) today, will I have to reinstall when the release to manufacturing (RTM) version is available, or can I use a license key to make it RTM?

A. The final code release of Server 2008 R2 is a different set of code from the RC, so you can't make an RC installation an RTM installation by entering a new license key. You can't download an update to patch the files that have changed, either.

You can, however, upgrade an RC build of Server 2008 R2 to RTM by inserting the RTM media into a system the RC and selecting the Upgrade option.
