Microsoft Surface Firmware Updates for May 2013
Again, regular updates are just one of many reasons to choose Surface
May 14, 2013
Each month since the release of the first Surface tablet, Microsoft has issued firmware updates that improve the devices. And May is no different: Today, the firm is releasing firmware updates for Surface RT and Surface Pro. It’s the 7th straight month they’ve done so.
As noted previously, these updates are cumulative. That means that each update includes all previous updates, so if you miss a month, you’re covered in the next update.
Here’s what’s we’re getting in today’s updates, which as usual are delivered as part of Microsoft’s normal “patch Tuesday” schedule.
Surface RT
The May update includes these firmware and performance improvements:
UEFI firmware update that enhances Surface RT speaker volume and improves system stability.
Driver pack that improves performance and works with the updated UEFI firmware to enhance Surface RT speaker volume.
Trackpad Settings driver for Surface Type Cover to enable interaction with the Trackpad Settings app for Japanese customers.
Surface Pro
The May update includes these firmware and performance improvements:
UEFI firmware update enables the PXE boot feature. This feature is only available when using the Surface Pro Ethernet Adapter due to the UEFI integration needed to implement PXE boot.
Trackpad Settings driver for Surface Type Cover to enable interaction with the Trackpad Settings app for Japanese customers.
Continued improvement in Wi-Fi connectivity and stability.
As Mary Jo Foley notes in her own post about these updates, Surface Pro users should also consider grabbing the “TABLET PC – Enhanced Tablet Driver 7.1.1-12” driver from the Wacom support web site. This drivers adds pressure sensitivity to the Surface Pen when used in Adobe applications like Photoshop.
