Five More Microsoft Edge Extensions Quietly Arrive in the Windows Store
Over the last 3 1/2 months a total of 17 new extensions have been published for Microsoft Edge in the Windows Store. This is by far the biggest period of growth for the two year old browser and is a good sign.
At the end of May we reported about the addition of 12 new Microsoft Edge extensions that had been published in the Windows Store over the course of a three month period. That brought the total number of extensions available for the two year old browser to 35.
This week, thanks to a tip from Twitter user @NecroSoftCore, we have learned that five more extensions have shown up in the Windows Store for Microsoft Edge which now brings that total number of extensions to 40.
When the Windows 10 Anniversary Update was release last July, this was the first public OS update that supported extensions in Microsoft Edge, there were just 13 extensions listed in the Windows Store. Until recently that growth has continued to be anemic with a total of just 19 available in December 2016, 23 in February 2017, and then 35 in late May 2017.
That is basically a doubling in size over the last 5 1/2 months compared to adding just six extensions over the first five months after they became available. However, it is still too slow and the floodgates need to be opened up so that users have options in Edge for the extensions they use in other browsers like FireFox and Chrome. That will certainly help with the adoption of Edge as a daily driver for many users on Windows 10.
In addition, more extensions for Microsoft Edge also means more options for users of Windows 10 S since only store based extensions can be installed on the operating system.
Of course, that expansion will not occur until Microsoft opens up the Edge extensions submission to all developers.
Let's take a look at the five new extensions:
