Q. Can I upgrade to Windows Server 2012 Standard from Windows Server 2008 Datacenter or Windows Server 2008 R2 Datacenter?

Upgrading to a particular edition of Windows Server 2012 from Windows Server 2008 depends upon the editions you have.

A: No, you can't upgrade to Windows Server 2012 Standard from Windows Server 2008 Datacenter or Windows Server 2008 R2 Datacenter. The upgrade option doesn't allow an upgrade to a lower SKU version of the OS.

You could only perform an upgrade to the same or higher SKU level, such as from Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise to Windows Server 2012 Datacenter.
