Gianus Technologies unveiled new security technology that the company says makes OSs completely invisible to intruders. The new product, Phantom Total Security, works by splitting a hard disk into two partitions. One partition is public and the other partition is invisible, thereby protecting all data on the hidden partition.

Phantom Total Security works by installing a parallel OS that boots when the system boots. Once active, users can click a GUI-based button to make a designated partition invisible. Access to the hidden partition requires a strongly protected password. Gianus Technologies designed the software so that sophisticated attempts to crack the access password can cause the software to completely destroy all data on the partition, leaving intruders with nothing to gain by further password-cracking attempts.

Phantom Total Security runs on Windows XP, Windows 2000, Windows Me, Windows NT, and Windows 9x. Select vendors and value-added resellers (VARs) offer the software preinstalled on new hard disks. End-user pricing starts at $190. Visit the Gianus Technologies Phantom Web site for more information.
