Out-of-Band Surface Pro Firmware Prepares for Windows 8.1

If you're planning on updating your Microsoft Surface Pro v1 to Windows 8.1 when it's publicly released on October 17th, 2013, you'll need to update the device's firmware.

Microsoft has released a firmware update for the Surface Pro that is a required update for those anticipating installing the Windows 8.1 upgrade shortly after it's available to the masses. The Surface Pro update history page, lists the following as improvements to the original device:

  • UEFI firmware updates.

  • System Aggregator firmware updates.

  • Various device driver updates to enhance the Windows 8.1 update experience, and optimizations for using Type Cover 2 or Surface Touch Cover 2.

Alternatively, the Surface RT needs no updates to work with Windows 8.1 RT version. The Surface RT update history page states:

In preparation for the release of Windows RT 8.1, no additional updates were released for Surface RT running Windows RT.
