Microsoft Delivers Fixes for Windows 8.1 Preview

Less than a week after the public release of the Windows 8.1 Preview, Microsoft has delivered a set of fixes for the pre-release update, providing those who did install the software with bug fixes and functional updates. The updates are available through Windows Update on Windows 8 or RT systems with the Windows 8.1 Preview installed.

To get the updates, use Windows Search to search for update and then filter the search to Settings. Choose Windows Update from the search results list.

In Windows Update, you may need to click Check for updates. You should see at several new Important updates that include the term Update for Windows 8.1 Preview in the name. These are the updates you are looking for.

Compatibility update for Windows RT 8.1 Preview and Windows 8.1 Preview: June 2013

Microsoft regularly releases Windows compatibility updates to improve the overall user experience. This compatibility update improves the compatibility experience in Windows RT 8.1 Preview and in Windows 8.1 Preview and includes updates for AutoCAD, Dr. Web Security Space Pro, Nero InCD, Telenor, Naver Vaccine, eScan Internet Security Suite for Home Users, TuneUp Utilities 2013, Parallels Desktop, McAfee Anti-Theft, AVG PC TuneUp, Norton security products, Quake 4, Serious Sam, and AVG Internet Security 2013.

This update resolves an issue in which some Windows Store apps crash when you start them.

This update improves the robustness of data files.

Can't sign in to a Google account through certain applications in Windows 8.1 Preview

You cannot sign in to your Google account through Picasa in Windows 8.1 Preview. Therefore, you cannot perform actions that require that you sign in, such as sharing photos through Gmail.

Can’t resume a download in Internet Explorer 11 Preview

When you start and then pause a download in Internet Explorer 11 Preview on a Windows 8.1 Preview-based computer, the download cannot be resumed.

This update improves the performance of the Search charm.

Windows Store app is not added to the correct category in Windows 8.1 Preview

When you download a Windows Store app on a Windows 8.1 Preview-based computer and then view the app in the All Apps view, the app is not added to the correct category.

This update resolves an issue that could cause glitches during playback of video files that are stored on SkyDrive.

Authentication issues when you use Windows Store apps that declare the Enterprise Authentication capability in Windows 8.1 Preview

When you use Windows Store apps that declare the Enterprise Authentication capability in Windows 8.1 Preview, you are prompted for user credentials or encounter authentication failures.

Note that you may not see all of these updates, and that I saw some different updates on Windows 8 and Windows RT with Windows 8.1.
