Quick Tip: Accessing Command Prompt Directly from File Explorer in Windows 10

If you find yourself needing to access various directories on your Windows 10 device in the Command Prompt interface then this tip will be a welcomed addition to your toolbox.

Right now you can open a Command Prompt and then start typing in commands to list the directories, type in the directory name you want to access, and repeat until you arrive at the sub-directory you need.

A little known option and feature in File Explorer will allow you to use its graphical interface to drill down to the directory you need to access in Command Prompt and then jump straight there in a Command Prompt window.

Making this happens is very easy.

Just open File Explorer and then browse to the directory that you need to access in a Command Prompt.

Once you are there click/tap inside of the address bar and type cmd and then press/tap enter.

That will then open a Command Prompt window and you will find yourself in that same exact directory.

From here you can execute your Command Prompt magic inside of the directory and close the open windows when you are all done.

My first website – AnotherWin95.com – came online in 1995. Back then I used GeoCities Web Hosting for it and WindowsObserver.com is the result of the work I have done on that site since 1995.

In January 2010 my community contributions were recognized by Microsoft when I received my first Most Valuable Professional (MVP) Award for the Windows Operating System. Since then I have been renewed as a Microsoft MVP each subsequent year since that initial award. I am also a member of the inaugural group of Windows Insider MVPs which began in 2016.
