App Tour: Instagram on Windows 10 Desktops and Tablets

 

Late last week, Instagram and Microsoft announced an updated to the Universal Windows Platform Instagram app for Windows 10 that brings Instagram capabilities to certain desktop and tablet PCs running Windows 10.

Over on the Windows 10 Experience blog, details were released about the capabilities of the desktop/tablet version of the app and its limitations - more on that later.

This new version of the app does support the following capabilities for the Instagram service:

  • Post and edit photos* – Instagram makes sharing moments with everyone in your world easy, speedy, and fun.

  • Stories – Stories from people you follow will appear in a row at the top of Feed.

  • Instagram Live Tile – Find out what your friends and family are up to at a glance.

  • Rich, native notifications – We’ll send you the notifications you want to see so that you don’t miss important updates.

  • Instagram Direct – Instagram Direct lets you exchange threaded messages with one or more people, and share posts you see in Feed as a message.

  • Full featured Search, Explore, Profile, and Feed.

It is that first entry of features that has the caveat attached to it - here is the exact wording from the original article:

*Posting and editing photos only available for tablets and PCs with touch screens and backward facing cameras.

That restriction alone makes this app very limiting in the usefulness category.

So many of us sync images to our cloud storage and then go to a desktop to work on them. If you are using a laptop or tablet with a rear facing camera you are in good shape however, desktop users lacking that backwards facing camera and the touch screen are left out of the Instagram loop.

Why is is that Instagram does not want users posted from their desktop systems?
