(Not Used) Windows 10 (Redstone 4) Build Tracker for PCs

This page will track all of the Redstone 4 Development Branch builds for PCs that Microsoft ships to testers in the Windows Insider Program.

Redstone 4, the code name for the next major update to Windows 10, is expected to be released sometime in the spring of 2018.

The builds will be listed in this tracker from newest to oldest and all you need to do is click through the gallery images to see information about each released build including how many days it has been since the last build release for Redstone 4.

Improvements and Fixes for PC

When the Action Center is black (the default option) the “clear all”, “expand”/”collapse”, and “see more” link text will now all use your accent color – making them pop more and improving discoverability.

We’ve updated the Action Center to now support a two finger touch gesture to dismiss all notifications. Place two fingers vertically within the Action Center near the edge opposite to the side of your screen. Then slide these fingers towards the side of the screen. You will notice all notification groups following your fingers and then dismissing as you slide your fingers off the side of the screen.

We fixed an issue in XAML resulting in text animations appearing slightly blurry in the last flight until the animation had stopped (for example, when loading the main page of Settings).

We fixed an issue resulting in the taskbar being unexpectedly thick if you booted up the PC while plugged in to an external monitor with a different DPI.

We fixed an issue that caused minimized per-monitor DPI aware windows to miss DPI changes and end up with a mix of DPI scaling upon restoring.

We fixed an issue from recent flights where when Slideshow was enabled resuming from sleep a second time might place the Lock screen in a state where it couldn’t be dismissed without pressing Ctrl + Alt + Del.

We fixed an issue resulting in an unexpected change in mouse sensitivity in the last flight for PCs using non-default display scaling.

We fixed an issue resulting in Asphalt 8 not accepting input in recent flights.

We fixed an issue resulting in progress wheels on certain websites in Microsoft Edge unexpectedly moving out of place during their rotation.

We fixed an issue where the Windows Hello strings would appear on top of the page when performing a pin reset from the login screen.

We fixed an issue resulting in Start, Action Center and notification toasts at times having a background that was 100% transparent.

We fixed an issue from recent flights where the Action Center icon might show it had some number of notifications but when you opened Action Center no notifications were displayed.

We fixed an issue from recent flights where suggested apps were visible in Start despite the related setting being off. For now, if you encounter this please try toggling Settings > Personalization > Start > “Occasionally show suggestions in Start”.

We fixed a recent issue where removed placeholder tiles in Start might come back after explorer.exe restarted.

We fixed an issue resulting in certain live tiles not updating in the last flight, including the Weather and Money apps. If you were impacted by this you may need to unpin and repin the live tile for it to work again.

We fixed an issue from recent flights where typing immediately after opening up the Start menu would sometimes not switch to Cortana, even though if you tapped the Cortana icon Cortana was up and running.

We fixed an issue where notification groups in the Action Center couldn’t be dismissed by swiping across the app name. We also fixed a recent issue where notifications in the Action Center couldn’t be dismissed with pen.

We’ve fixed some timing issues so that swiping to dismiss a notification toast should feel more reliable now.

You can now middle click to dismiss a notification toast!

We fixed an issue resulting in no “Safe to Remove Hardware” notification after following the device removal process from the “Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media” tray icon

We fixed an issue where it wasn’t possible to tab to the quick action area of Action Center if there were no notifications visible.

We fixed an issue where the network flyout might become unresponsive when Bluetooth was enabled.

We fixed a deadlock resulting in Start, the network flyout, and other Shell UI elements becoming unresponsive after tethering certain Android phones.

We fixed an issue that could potentially result in Start not launching after installing a 3rdparty IME.

We fixed an issue where if you started dragging a tile on Start just as the flip animation started in the tile, it could result in the tile becoming invisible under your finger until you released it.

We fixed an issue where right clicking on an image file in File Explorer would show “Next desktop background” instead of “Set as desktop background” in recent flights.

We fixed an issue where desktop icons sometimes couldn’t be drag-and-dropped to certain places on the desktop, even though the desired spot appeared to align to the same grid as the other icons already in place.

We fixed an issue where desktop icons could become unexpectedly spaced out when logging in after the primary monitor’s DPI had changed.

Microsoft Edge

When using Find on Page, pressing F3 will now go to the next result. Shift+F3 will go to the previous result.

We fixed an issue resulting in certain websites not rendering correctly when used in inPrivate mode.

We fixed an issue resulting in Microsoft Edge sometimes getting into a state where after right-clicking a website the context menu would immediately dismiss.

We fixed an issue which resulted in the video element defaulting to a black background if the size didn’t match the aspect ratio of the video.

We fixed an issue where right-clicking and selecting “copy link” would sometimes not work as expected.

We fixed an issue where copying bitmap images from Microsoft Edge wouldn’t work.

We fixed an issue where pasting Chinese, Japanese, or Korean text into Microsoft Edge in recent builds would result in question marks instead of the expected characters.

We fixed an issue where misspelled words in input fields were sometimes not updated when a correction is selected from the spell checker.

We fixed an issue from recent flights where a session cookie might unexpectedly get overwritten, potentially resulting in login issues on certain websites after a page refresh.

We fixed an issue resulting in status updates to Facebook.com sometimes being erased during input.

We fixed an issue causing certain controls such as calendar widgets to break on some sites.

We fixed an issue for websites with images added using source-set where the height would sometimes unexpectedly be computed to 30px.

We fixed an issue where clicking Run on a download in Microsoft Edge that required elevation would result in input no longer being received in that window until switching focus away and back to it.

We fixed an issue resulting in the tab bar sometimes drawing incorrectly after dragging the window between two monitors with different DPIs.

We fixed an issue from recent builds where you couldn’t use the letter ‘x’ when renaming a favorite.

We fixed an issue resulting in a crash when using drag and drop to rearrange favorites.

We fixed an issue resulting in not being able to type @ using the Hungarian or Czech keyboard in recent flights.

We fixed an issue where PDFs containing xref streams might have rendered as blank pages in the last few flights in Microsoft Edge.

Scrollbars in Microsoft Edge will now be the correct size on secondary monitors where the DPI differs from the primary monitor.

Input Improvements

We fixed an issue that resulted in words sometimes being input twice when using the handwriting panel in certain websites using Microsoft Edge.

We fixed an issue where you could end up with multiple underlined words when using shapewriting in a text field then switching focus away from and back to that text field and shapewriting some more.

We fixed an issue in Win32 apps where a space wasn’t automatically inserted if you used shapewriting to write a word then tapped a letter to start a new word on the touch keyboard.

We fixed an issue with the Hebrew touch keyboard where tapping certain keys didn’t produce the expected character. Please take a moment with this build to try out the touch keyboard in your language and let us know how it feels for you.

We fixed an issue where the Full touch keyboard layout was unexpectedly not available at certain screen resolutions.

We fixed an issue when using the Emoji Panel with Narrator where using tab to switch sections would resulting in Narrator repeating the old section name for each emoji instead of the current one.

Changes to pen behavior in recent Insider builds have been met with positive feedback, however also caused drawing in certain apps to work incorrectly. In this Insider build we’ve made a change to address this feedback pertaining to Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Lightroom, and Clip Studio Paint.

General

We fixed the issue causing the Virus and Threat Protection pillar in Windows Defender Security Center to show as “unknown” after upgrading to the last build.

We fixed an issue from recent flights resulting in the idle timer continually being reset – thus preventing the display from going to sleep.

We fixed an issue resulting in an unexpected 0x800706BE error sometimes when trying to initiate a remote desktop connection in recent flights.

We fixed an issue some Insiders were experiencing where Windows Update’s Delivery Optimization settings would reset back to default upon leaving the page.

If you previously accessed Device Encryption on the About Settings page, you’ll find we’ve moved it to its own page under Settings > Update & Security > Device Encryption.

We fixed an issue where the lock screen might unexpectedly just show your theme color instead of the selected custom or Spotlight image after upgrading in recent builds.

We fixed an issue from recent flights resulting in certain apps crashing when attempting to use the app to capture a picture using the webcam.

We fixed an issue resulting in Node.js (v6.9.4) not being able to run scripts stored in OneDrive or access any paths in OneDrive.

We fixed an issue resulting in an unexpectedly large number of OneDrive app-requested download notifications.

We fixed an issue where using Alt-P to open the preview pane in File Explorer for PDFs associated with Acrobat would say “This file can’t be previewed.” in recent builds instead of displaying their first page.We fixed an issue where right-clicking on the volume icon in the systray might sometimes unexpectedly take 3-5 seconds for the context menu to appear.

We fixed an issue where changing the selected option in the dropdown under Multiple Displays in Display Settings didn’t do anything.

We fixed an issue resulting in adding a phone or taking a new profile picture in Settings not working if Settings was run elevated.

We fixed an issue resulting in DVD Player failing with error 0xC00D36B4 on machines with DX10 graphics cards.

We fixed an issue for PowerShell in Japanese where the “た。” character of the sentence “検証 23% が 完了しました。” would display repeatedly when running SFC /scannow.

We fixed an issue resulting in certain games like Cut the Rope, Buggy Racing and others from unexpectedly extending past the bottom of the screen when put in full screen mode in recent flights.

We fixed an issue with the custom color picker, for example seem in Color Settings, where panning with touch across the colors would move the area rather than smoothly update the selected color.

We fixed an issue resulting in acrylic material’s noise layer blinking in a second after the rest of the UI if the UI was animating in on top of a video.

We’ve improved the rendering performance when using touch to pan UWP app windows that have applied acrylic material.

We fixed an issue resulting in XAML controls sometimes unexpectedly becoming pure white in recent builds when transparency was enabled.

We fixed an issue resulting in the OneNote app sometimes having rendering issues in recent flights (for example, missing text blocks).

We fixed an issue resulting in Forza Horizon 3 crashing when loading (after selecting “continue”).

As a result of low usage, Screen Saver functionality has been disabled in themes. Screen Saver functionality in Group Policies, Control Panel, and Sysprep is now deprecated but continues to be functional. Lock screen features and policies are preferred.

Improvements and Fixes for PC

Based on your feedback we’ve adjusted the design of the address bar so now even if the address bar isn’t in focus to start with when you click and drag the text it will remain under the cursor. Previously the text would shift as the “http://” appeared – this change will make it easier to quickly edit parts of the URL.

We fixed an issue where right-clicking on an image in Microsoft Edge and selecting copy then later pasting the clipboard content would result in the image URL being pasted rather than the image itself.

We fixed an issue where if a tab had been opened while Microsoft Edge was in full screen mode, using Ctrl + W to close that tab while still in full screen mode would close the content but leave the tab in the frame.

We fixed an issue where if you had two unrelated tabs in Microsoft Edge and opened a link from the first in a new tab, the new tab would appear to the right of the second tab rather than the first.

We’ve improved the performance of launching the touch keyboard after tapping the touch keyboard button in the taskbar.

We fixed an issue where using WIN+H to dictate into a UWP app’s text field wasn’t working.

We fixed an issue resulting in the Japanese IME prediction candidates position being shifted and overlapping with typed text if you set the page zoom level to something other than “100%” in Microsoft Edge.

We’ve adjusted the design of the Japanese curve-flick touch keyboard to display numbers and English letter keys in a smaller font that’s more consistent with the size of the Japanese character keys.

We have added new status strings to the WDAG splash dialog to provide more information about the startup stages for WDAG. These new strings will be displayed to users when WDAG is starting up and when it’s being resumed from a paused state.

We have also made significant improvements to container launch times by optimizing background preparation of the WDAG container.

We fixed a number of issues that were impacting networking inside the WDAG container as well as a poor user experience when connecting to the WDAG container.

Fixed an issue where the WDAG launch resulted in Error Codes 0x02 / 0x00 or 0x02 / 0c.

Fixed an issue where only part of the WDAG window was being displayed after launch.

Added a registry key to allow users to optimize WDAG launch times during active browsing by not suspending the WDAG container when the WDAG window is closed.  You can set the registry key to optimize for performance here: ComputerHKLMSoftwareMicrosoftHVSI, Value name: SuspendOnContainerClosed, REG_DWORD, Value data: 1.  Note: Setting this key will result in the container not pausing and the container will not release committed memory.

We fixed an issue where the battery flyout might have shown unexpected text for the % charged (specifically “%1!s!%2!s!% until fully charged”).

We’ve fixed an issue resulting in certain network setting being lost on upgrade and reverting to default. Specifically, static IP address configuration was reverted to DHCP, and networks marked private were reverted to public.

If you had installed Builds 16226-16237 and had found Storage Spaces to not be working, today’s build expands upon the fix in 16241 to remediate those PCs that had upgraded from the impacted build range and were still in a bad state. Thanks again to the Insiders that have helped us investigate this!

We fixed an issue where if you switched to a new tab and back in Microsoft Edge, Narrator would start reading from the top of the page again, rather than remember where you had been on the page.

We fixed an issue where right-clicking on a folder in File Explorer and saying Scan with Windows Defender wouldn’t work if the folder name contained #.

We fixed a rare issue where the Windows Search Service might get stuck on initialization after upgrade, resulting in File Explorer showing “Working on it…” infinitely when accessing certain folders.

We fixed an issue resulting in certain games such as Wargaming’s World of Tanks, World of Warships, and World of Warplanes appearing to hang/freeze shortly after launch when played on x86 PCs in recent flights.

We fixed an issue where some Insiders were not being offered builds higher than Build 16241.

We fixed an issue where connecting to a VPN using a solution downloaded from the Windows Store may result in a system crash.

Known Issues for PC

Eye Tracking

Eye tracking does not work well in direct sunlight. The device may require new calibration when moving to a location with different lighting conditions.

The launchpad partially blocks the Tobii UI during device calibration. To work around this, turn off Eye Control during calibration and turn it back on when you are done. You can also use touch or mouse to reposition the UI during calibration.

Sometimes shape-writing can get stuck on. You can fix this by dwelling at the shape-writing icon to turn it on and off again

Sometimes the reposition UI icon in the launchpad takes focus after exiting text-to-speech

Other

Start, Action Center and notification toasts may at times have a background that is 100% transparent. A fix will be available in later flight – for now, if you encounter this issue, try ending ShellExperienceHost.exe via Task Manager or rebooting to resolve the issue.

We’re investigating reports where Action Center shows it has some number of notifications but when you click to open Action Center, there are no notifications shown.

We’re investigating reports that suggested apps are visible in Start despite the related setting being off. For now, if you encounter this please try toggling Settings > Personalization > Start > “Occasionally show suggestions in Start”.

When installing or updating a Windows Store app, you may see error 80070057. As a workaround, you can get the latest app by uninstalling the older version of the app from your device and reinstall latest version from Store.

Improvements and Fixes for PC

We fixed an issue where the touch keyboard might get into a state where swiping across it would move the keyboard contents around.

We’ve updated the Japanese one-handed touch keyboard specific key labels to be written using the Yu-gothic UI font.

We fixed an issue where the Japanese touch keyboard might sometimes take multiple taps of the delete key to delete a selected character or phrase in certain text fields.

We fixed an issue where the touch keyboard’s options in Settings to disable suggestions and disable “add a space after I choose a text suggestion” didn’t work.

We’ve adjusted two-finger precision touchpad scrolling so it should feel a bit smoother now – please try it out in today’s build.

We fixed an issue where the Microsoft Pinyin IME candidate window wasn’t visible when Microsoft Edge was in full screen mode (F11).

We fixed an issue where Japanese IME status notification didn’t appear when the IME was turned on with Kana input method.

We’ve adjusted the size of the one-handed touch keyboard to be a little bigger, as well as added a thicker border as padding around it so you’re less likely to accidentally tap outside the keyboard and dismiss it.

We’ve updated the new XAML touch keyboard to now support a full keyboard layout option for English (United States), English (Australia), French (France), Italian (Italy), German (Germany) and Spanish (Spain) languages. Appreciate everyone who shared feedback on the subject! To access this keyboard layout, tap the button in the top left of the touch keyboard.

As you launch and dismiss the touch keyboard, you’ll now notice an animation of it sliding in and out.

We’ve softened the sound of typing on the touch keyboard.

Microsoft Edge will no longer re-scale sites when in Tablet Mode with narrow viewport width (such as in a snapped view or portrait orientation). This provides a more natural experience on modern responsive sites in tablet mode.

In addition to scrolling, pen can now also select and drag objects when barrel button (a button on the side of the pen) is pressed. This functionality was already available in Win32 apps and Microsoft Edge as of 16215, and today we’re expanding it to include all UWP apps as well. Please try it out in your favorite apps and let us know how the experience is working for you.

We fixed an issue where it wasn’t possible to use the pen to move a Win32 app window up and down by dragging the title bar.

We fixed an issue where the coordinates were slightly off when using the pen to point erase in the last few flights.

We fixed an issue from recent builds where the Copy Link option displayed in Microsoft Edge when you right-click a hyperlink wasn’t working.

We fixed numerous reliability issues in Microsoft Edge that will improve user experience with crashes and hangs within the app.

We fixed an issue in Microsoft Edge with PDF failing to open on refresh.

We fixed an issue in Microsoft Edge with PDF fitting to page for certain books.

We fixed an issue with Pinned Sites from Microsoft Edge where it wasn’t showing the right favicon on the taskbar.

We fixed an issue from the last flight where if you had display scaling set higher than 100%, you might encounter a bug where the hit targeting was offset when interacting with various parts of the shell. This was particularly noticeable in Action Center, where it might appear that nothing in Action Center could be clicked or tapped, but could also have been experienced in other UI around the system.

We fixed an issue resulting in IMAP email accounts such as Gmail, Yahoo, and Aol potentially not syncing in the Mail app in the last two builds.

We fixed the issue causing Windows Defender Security Center to be unable to configure and list items for Controlled folder access, Threat History and Exclusions due to a crash in the UI.

Narrator Scan Mode is now on by default for just the Edge app. You can continue to toggle Scan Mode on and off with Caps Lock + Space. We made this change based on your feedback. Please keep providing feedback with Caps Lock + EE.

We fixed a bug that resulting in poor text rendering on some machines when Magnifier was running with bitmap smoothing enabled. Please try it in today’s build and let us know if it seems better now.

We fixed an issue where the Windows Defender Security Center icon appeared unexpectedly stretched out when using a wide sized tile pinned to Start.

We fixed an issue where certain inbox apps might unexpectedly show a progress bar on their Start tiles for a short time after upgrading.

We fixed an issue resulting in explorer.exe using an unexpectedly high amount of CPU in recent flights when certain apps such as Microsoft Edge were running.

We fixed an issue where Groove Music’s mini view player would reset its position to default if you used File Explorer to open and start playing a new mp3 in Groove Music.

We fixed an issue resulting in some apps, such as Tweetium, not rendering the UI correctly and becoming difficult to use.

We fixed an issue resulting in the notification prompting you to enter tablet mode not working properly when you access in recent flights.

We’ve heard your feedback and have adjusted the My People emoji above the Taskbar to now be referred to simply as “My People notifications”. This terminology can be found in Taskbar Settings.

We fixed an issue where the mouse response might appear erratic on certain devices when playing games with Raw Input disabled. If you are a gamer and had noticed this issue, we’d appreciate you trying this in today’s build and letting us know if it’s improved.

We fixed an issue where the insertion point mouse cursor appeared white for some Insiders, making it invisible against the white background of many text boxes.

Some Insiders may have noticed the Windows Error Dialog had a new string in recent flights (“opening a portal to another dimension”). It was a placeholder while we decided what string we wanted to go with, and based on your feedback we’ve updated it to explain that the problem is being reported to Microsoft.

We fixed the issue with PC Games using the Origin overlay where the use of overlay may cause game movement to lock up.

TruePlay, formerly called Game Monitor, is a placeholder within the Windows UI. Your games cannot be affected at this time. We’ll have more to share soon.

Known Issues for PC

If you installed Builds 16226-16237 and upgrade to this build, Storage Spaces will not work correctly. While Build 16241 contained a fix for the general reported issue with Storage Spaces in that build range, we discovered that the fix only applies for computers not already in the bad state, and need to do some extra work to return those already impacted to the good state. Special thanks to the Insiders that have helped us investigate this!

Trying to use the dictation hotkey (WIN + H) in UWP apps won’t work – you’ll see the UI come up and immediately dismiss. If you’d still like to use dictation, the microphone in the touch keyboard will work. You can right-click the Taskbar for an option to show the touch keyboard button if it’s not already visible.

We’re investigating your reports that after upgrading to the latest Insider Preview builds, some network settings are lost and revert to default settings. Static IP address configuration is reverted to DHCP. Networks which were marked as private are reverted to public. After the upgrade you will need to manually readjust your network settings back to your preferred settings.
