FAQs

Q. How can I create a Web-based dialog box in which users can enter email addresses to be added to a distribution group?

A. For the FAQ "How can I use a script to add email addresses to a distribution group in Active Directory (AD)?" which you can view at http://www.windowsitpro.com/Articles/ArticleID/53921/53921.html , I created a script that adds email addresses to a distribution group. I built the same logic into an ASP page that allows Web-based entry for email addresses. As with the earlier script, you need to modify the HTML code for your LDAP paths. You can download the code at http://www.windowsitpro.com/articles/download/enterAdd.zip .

Because this is a Web page running under the anonymous context of Microsoft IIS, you need to give the IUSR_ account Create Contact Object type permissions to the container in which you're creating objects. You configure this in the Microsoft Management Console (MMC) Active Directory Users and Computers snap-in under Properties, Security, Advanced, Permissions, Add, as the figureshows. You also need to give write permissions to the distribution group (Properties, Security, Grant Write), as the figureshows.

The figureshows an example of the dialog box where users can add contacts.

Q. Where can I view videos about Windows Vista?

A. Microsoft has released a series of videos about Vista, which you can view at http://www.vistapartnervideos.com/ .

Q. What is Windows Live Messenger?

A. Microsoft has moved away from the MSN Messenger series of IM clients in favor of the new Windows Live branding. However Windows Live Messenger is effectively the next version of MSN Messenger 7.5. Information about Windows Live Messenger is located at http://ideas.live.com/programPage.aspx?versionId=0eccd94b-eb48-497c-8e60-c6313f7ebb73 , and you can download the program at http://g.msn.com/1csbeta/Mess80_EN .

New features in the IM client include voice calling via the Verizon Web Calling feature, new shared folder capabilities, updated "Add contact" features, and an updated interface.

Q. How can I replicate public folders between different Exchange organizations?

A. Microsoft provides the InterOrg Replication Tool to synchronize public folders and free/busy information between Exchange organizations running Exchange 2000 Server Service Pack 3 (SP3) or later. The tool consists of two components:

  1. The Replication Configuration program (exscfg.exe)

  2. Replication service (exssrv.exe)

You can download the tool and help documents from http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=E7A951D7-1559-4F8F-B400-488B0C52430E&displaylang=en .

All communication is via RPC (port 135) and two randomly picked ports (unless you configure fixed RPC ports), so make sure that any firewalls between the Exchange servers allow RPC communication.

Q. How do I enable Windows Live Messenger or MSN Messenger to show contacts the music I'm currently listening to?

A. To enable your current music to show as your personal message in Messenger perform the following steps:

  1. Select "Options..." from the Tools menu of Messenger.

  2. Select the Personal section.

  3. Select the "Show song information from Windows Media Player as a personal message" and click OK, as the figureshows.

Caution: This will expose your music "taste" to all and should be used with caution, especially if you're a Britney Spears fan.
