Skyhook Wireless, provider of the Wi-Fi PositioningSystem, announced an upgrade to the Skyhook Software Development Kit (SDK). TheSDK now includes location-targeted advertising to provide mobile applicationdevelopers with a built-in revenue source. Skyhook also has expanded thefunctionality of the SDK, adding Virtual GPSto ease WPS development, and flexible newdeployment modes that optimize the WPS forany type of LBS application.
Distribution andrevenue models for mobile applications are ambiguous, and applicationdevelopers struggle to monetize their applications. Responding to thesechallenges, Skyhook has integrated highly targeted location-based advertisingfrom Quattro Wireless an industry leader in bringing content creators, advertisers, and wireless operators together to cultivate opportunities in themobile Web space into the upgraded Skyhook SDK. When developers implement WPSlocation, they can immediately start generating revenue via location-based adsembedded in their mobile applications. The Skyhook SDK with ads from QuattroWireless is available now.
Developing mobileapplications across fragmented platforms and devices can be time consuming andexpensive. Virtual GPS, a new feature of theSkyhook SDK, simplifies the implementation of WPSinto applications already supporting GPS.Developers of GPS-enabled applications cansimply plug into the WPS engine using theNMEA standard interface with no additional code changes.
The upgraded SkyhookSDK allows for WPS customization based onthe specific needs of various LBS applications that access location technologyin different ways. Developers can choose the Push-to-Fix deployment mode for on-demandlocation, or Continuous Scanning mode for navigation and other applicationsthat require constant location awareness. Developers also now can choose WPSTiling mode as an efficient way to provide autonomous WPSlocation.
The Skyhook SDKsupports Windows Vista, Windows XP, Windows Mobile 5 and 6, Mac OS X, SymbianS60, and various Linux platforms. WPScoverage includes more than 40 million access points across North America, Europe, and Asia.Developers can download the SDK today at http://www.skyhookwireless.com/developers/sdk.php.
