RIM acquires tinyHippos
Purchase of mobile emulator startup adds another tool for developers looking to test and deploy cross-platform mobile apps

Research in Motion has added more tools for developers with the acquisition of tinyHippos, creator of a mobile app emulator called Ripple that lets developers test and deploy cross-platform applications.
Ripple runs in a web browser and lets developers see how apps operated in a variety of mobile environments. Ontario-based tinyHippos launched the platform in 2009.
In a post on its developer blog, RIM’s VP of global alliances and developer relations, Tyler Lessard, had this to say about the acquisition and how it will enhance developers’ experiences:
We have been integrating support for web technologies like HTML5 and BlackBerry WebWorks into our developer platform, and working to continually deliver enhanced tools and frameworks to our developer community. We look forward to working with the team at tinyHippos to further provide a simplified and streamlined experience to our developers.
Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. Industry observers have noted the multi-platform aspect of the transaction as significant: RIM is preparing to launch Playbook, its entry into the hotly competitive tablet market, and has confirmed that it will offer support for Android apps on the device.
