A. When you install Exchange 2000, the system creates a default Network News Transfer Protocol (NNTP) virtual server. You can create extra NNTP servers that will listen on ports other than 119 and can write articles to a file store, remote share, or a public folder. The last option lets you feed news articles from remote servers into Public Folders, which users can then access via their Web clients.

  1. Start the Microsoft Management Console (MMC) Exchange System Manager snap-in (Start, Programs, Microsoft Exchange, System Manager).

  2. Expand the Servers branch, Server name, Protocols, NNTP.

  3. Right-click NNTP, and select New, NNTP Virtual Server from the context menu.

  4. Enter a name for the new NNTP virtual server (e.g., Windows News), and click Next.

  5. Select the IP address and the port for this NNTP server. You can't use port 119 because the default NNTP virtual server uses it. Make sure you choose a port that isn't in use (e.g., 3119). Click Next.

  6. Select a path for the NNTP files. The standard files for the NNTP virtual server reside in %systemdrive%Inetpubntpfile, so a good place to put the files for our example NNTP server would be %systemdriveInetpubntpfilewin (the system creates the folder). Click Next.

  7. Select the location for the news content: File System, Remote Share, or Exchange Public Folder Database. Select the desired location. (For this example, I chose a Public Folder database because I used a Public Folder database I created in How do I create a new Public Folder store?). Click Next.

  8. Click Browse to find the store location.

  9. Select the folder (I created a News Articles folder under the root Windows Folders Public Store via the MMC Exchange System Manager, Folders, New, Public Folder), and click OK.

  10. Click Finish.

You've now created a new NNTP virtual server, and you can connect to it. In your news client, you need to change the port to the port you selected in step 5. (In Outlook Express, you change the port setting on the Advanced tab.)
