Q. In Windows Server 2016 do I need a dedicated host for the Network Virtualization gateway instances?
A. In Windows Server 2012 R2 you need to dedicate a Hyper-V host to host the NVGRE gateways which will not host regular VMs that are part of Virtual Networks. The NVGRE gateways enable connectivity for virtual networks such as external connectivity, connection to other networks and site-to-site connectivity. Windows Server 2016 removes the requirement for a dedicated host for the gateways which can now co-exist with network virtualization member VMs.
