How can I install Microsoft Management Console (MMC) 3.0 on Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP machines?

A. Windows 2003 R2 introduced MMC 3.0, and Microsoft has now made the new management console available for Windows 2003 and XP installations. Here are the download URLs for the various versions:

  1. Microsoft Management Console 3.0 for Windows XP (Service Pack 2--SP2--or above is required) http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=61fc1c66-06f2-463c-82a2-cf20902ffae0&DisplayLang=en

  2. Microsoft Management Console 3.0 for Windows Server 2003 http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=4c84f80b-908d-4b5d-8aa8-27b962566d9f&DisplayLang=en

  3. Microsoft Management Console 3.0 for Windows XP x64 Edition http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=1391d79c-9699-487a-bbc5-f5471fae7169&DisplayLang=en To enable the new interface functionality (by default it will behave and look the same as MMC 2.0), follow the instructions in the FAQ "How can I enable the new Microsoft Management Console (MMC) 3.0 feature set in Windows Server 2003 R2?" at http://www.windowsitpro.com/Article/ArticleID/49288/49288.html. Once enabled, full functionality will be available, as the figure shows shows.
