JSI Tip 2744. Slow Network Connection Timeout for User Profiles Group Policy may not work in your LAN environment?

If you have the Slow Network Connection Timeout for User Profiles policy enabled, with a connection speed of 4,294,967,196 Kbps (maximum), the connections may not be treated as a slow connection in your LAN environment?

Windows 2000 pings the computer 3 times with no data, and then 3 more times with 4 KB of data. If any response is less to 10 milliseconds, the link is assumed to be fast, and the user profile is downloaded from the server.

To properly enable Slow Network Connection Timeout for User Profiles:

1. Start / Run / MMC / OK.

2. Console / Add/Remove Snap-in / Add / Group Policy / Finish / Close / OK

3. Local Computer Policy / Computer Configuration / Administrative Templates / System.

4. Press Logon.

5. Double-click Slow Network Connection Timeout for User Profiles.

6. Enable the policy.

7. Type 4294967196 in the Connection Speed (Kbps) box.

8. Type 1 in the Time box.

9. Apply the policy.
