PC hardware heavyweight Dell Computer has taken an equity stake in Red HatSoftware, makers of Red Hat Linux, and agreed to install the Linux operatingsystem on a number of its PCs. Previously, Dell would install Linux only onlarge orders from major customers but this change of heart--and the dealwith Red Hat--signifies a major change in Dell's support of Linux, theUNIX-like open source operating system. Dell will be installing andsupporting Red Hat Linux on its Precision Workstations and PowerEdgeservers, effective immediately.
