Sharing the Experience of Building a Universal Windows Platform App - Pillbox

I think experiential learning and sharing is one of the best ways to learn about any subject in the world. When someone has used a technology or gone through a process there are lessons learned every step of the way. By sharing that experience it will not only help others learn some of the pitfalls but also areas where they can insure success.

Sharing the Experience of Building a Universal Windows Platform App - Pillbox

I think experiential learning and sharing is one of the best ways to learn about any subject in the world. When someone has used a technology or gone through a process there are lessons learned every step of the way.

By sharing that experience it will not only help others learn some of the pitfalls and how to deal with them but also highlights areas where they can insure successful outcomes.

I recently came across one of these experience based stories and wanted to share a link to it and some of the highlights this developer noted as they built a Universal Windows for their mom to help her manage taking her medications.

The app, called Pillbox, is from Windows developer kidjenius who built it for PC, Mobile, HoloLens and Surface Hub .

Some of the features of this app include:

  • Reminds you when to take your medicine

  • Stores list of medication

  • Simple design

  • Backup and restore data with OneDrive

  • Microsoft Band support

So we could actually stop there and point out that this app is very functional and does exactly as advertised. However, there is a lot more to this story and that is the reason for sharing it with you today.

The developer took the time to head over to Reddit and share about the experience of building this app.

He provides the reasoning behind building the app, some of the challenges he had to deal with, how he overcame those and what he learned about the process.

If you are building a Universal Windows Platform app then you should check out this developers summary of his own experience and i twill likely save you a few steps along the way.

But, wait...there's probably more so be sure to follow me on Twitter and Google+.

I served for 29 plus years in the U.S. Navy and retired as a Master Chief Petty Officer in November 2011. My work background in the Navy was telecommunications related so my hobby of computers fit well with what I did for the Navy. I consider myself a tech geek and enjoy most things in that arena.

My first website – AnotherWin95.com – came online in 1995. Back then I used GeoCities Web Hosting for it and WindowsObserver.com is the result of the work I have done on that site since 1995.

In January 2010 my community contributions were recognized by Microsoft when I received my first Most Valuable Professional (MVP) Award for the Windows Operating System. Since then I have been renewed as a Microsoft MVP each subsequent year since that initial award. I am also a member of the inaugural group of Windows Insider MVPs which began in 2016.

I previously hosted the Observed Tech PODCAST for 10 years and 317 episodes and now host a new podcast called Faith, Tech, and Space.

I began contributing to Penton Technology websites in January 2015 and in April 2017 I was hired as the Senior Content Producer for Penton Technology which is now Informa Tech. In that role, I contribute to ITPro Today and cover operating systems, enterprise technology, and productivity.
