Microsoft announced the release of a new guide designed to help users harden the security of their Windows 2000 systems. The guide consists of six chapters, three appendices, and checklists to help deploy the measures outlined in the guide. The guide helps configure Win2K in a more secure fashion in any of six different server roles.

A spokesperson for Microsoft said, "The Windows 2000 Security Hardening Guide provides easy to understand guidance, tools, and templates to effectively secure Windows 2000 in a variety of enterprise environments. It documents a number of security settings that can be configured based on specific requirements and scenarios, as well as new settings which are available in Windows 2000 Service Pack 3 to enhance the security posture of the platform."

The guide can be read online at Microsoft's TechNet Web site, or downloaded for offline use at the company's download site.
