Normally, you would use the Internet Information Services (IIS) Microsoft Management Console (MMC) snap-in to backup / restore your configuration.

After a catastrophic hardware failure causes you to reinstall Windows 2000 server, or when you install Exchange 2000 to a new server using the old server name, you must do a system state restore to restore the metabase, because it depends on on certain encryption keys that are backed up with the system state.

NOTE: The Ntbackup Advanced option to Automatically backup Protected System Files with the System State is the default setting.
