If your broadband connection requires you to provide a name and password to access the Internet, it is likely that your ISP is using the PPPoE (Point to Point Protocol over Ethernet) protocol. If the software that the ISP provides has not been designed for Windows XP, you will receive an error when you attempt to install it.

Since Windows XP provides native support for PPPoE, there is no need to install the vendor provided protocol.

To configure Windows XP for a broadband connection using PPPoE

  1. Start / Control Panel / Network and Internet Connections / Network Connections.

  2. Press Create a new connection (under Network Tasks) and press Next.

  3. Press Connect to the Internet and press Next.

  4. Press Setup my connection manually and press Next.

  5. Press Connect using a broadband connection that requires a user name and password.

  6. Type the name of the ISP into the Connection Name box and press Next.

  2. On the General tab, type the service name and press OK.
