  • CURE TEST ANXIETY: MICROSOFT CERTIFICATION EXAM SIMULATION TOOLS

In the July 2002 Windows and .NET Magazine, Tom Iwanski's Buyer’s Guide, "Microsoft Certification Exam Preparation Tools," reviews 15 exam simulation products that can help you improve your test-taking skills. Iwanski notes that although opinions differ about the value of any given certification, certification can improve your chances of getting a job and a higher salary. In response to IT professionals' need for certification, many companies now offer products devoted to helping you pass Microsoft certification exams. This Buyer's Guide presents tools that offer computer-based Microsoft certification exam preparation.
http://www.winnetmag.com/articles/index.cfm?articleid=25336

Although the goal of certification is better IT skills, passing the exams can also require improved test-taking skills—and exam simulation is an effective way to prepare for the test situation. According to Iwanski, "Although comparing the prices and coverage that each vendor offers is relatively easy, you should also investigate how accurately the simulations represent the actual tests, how well the vendors explain and reference the test answers, what tools the vendors provide for tracking your progress and identifying areas that need work, and what kind of customer support the vendors provide." Because Microsoft's time-limited exams incorporate extensive technical scenarios, multiple correct answers, and interactive graphical exhibits, they can be a bit daunting. However, exam simulation products should help—and most vendors offer trial versions of their products to test-drive. This Buyer's Guide includes the following vendors, with product name, description, price, and vendor contact information: BeachFront Quizzer, BFQ Press, CBT Vision, Cert21.com, The Coriolis Group, FastTrak Express, LearnKey, MeasureUp, Mobiliware, prepatest.com, Self Test Software, TestOut, Toggit Software, Transcender, and Whizlabs Software.

2. NEWS & VIEWS

  • NEW SECURITY EXAM COMING

Microsoft has released details about a new security exam—Exam 70-214, Implementing and Administering Security in a Microsoft Windows 2000 Network—that will debut in November or December of this year. You can use this exam as an elective for both the MCSE and Microsoft Certified Systems Administrator (MCSA) certifications. For more information, go to

  • 2 JAVA CERTIFICATIONS

Sun Microsystems will "split-version" its Java certifications when it releases new exams later in the year. The Certified Java Programmer exam will remain for Java 2 Platform 1.2, and a new concurrent exam for Java 2 Platform 1.4 will be available. For more information about the split track, go to

  • QUESTIONS FOR EXAM 70-270

Welcome to Certifiable, your exam-prep headquarters. Here you'll find questions about some of the tricky areas that are fair game for the certification exams. This week's questions cover topics for Exam 70-270: Installing, Configuring, and Administering Microsoft Windows XP Professional.

Question 1
Three users share a Windows XP Professional Edition workstation, which isn't a member of a domain, for scanning engineering schematics. You recently installed an 80GB SCSI drive in the workstation on which users will store the data from their scans. After creating one 80GB volume and formatting it with NTFS, you decide that you'll apply a quota for each user so that one user can't fill the volume. In Windows Explorer, you right-click the drive, select Properties, and select the Quota tab. At the tab, you select the "Enable quota management" check box, the "Deny disk space to users exceeding quota limit" check box, and the "Limit disk space to" option and leave the defaults in place. What's the default limit that you've set for each user (except those in the Administrators group)?

  1. 1KB

  2. 100MB

  3. 8GB (10 percent of the drive size)

  4. 800MB

  5. 80GB

Question 2
Oksana recently installed on her Windows XP Professional Edition workstation a new program that her company's developers wrote. The program installs a service known as yandex, which is set to automatically start when the system does. After a few days, Oksana's system refuses to start. She contacts the developers, and they suggest disabling the yandex service's automatic start until they can patch their code.

Oksana uses the XP CD-ROM to boot to the Recovery Console (RC), selects her XP installation, and enters the administrator's password. After the RC starts, which of the following commands should Oksana use to disable the yandex service?

  1. enable yandex service_boot_start

  2. enable yandex disable

  3. disable yandex service_boot_start

  4. disable yandex service_demand_start

  5. disable yandex

Question 3
You installed Windows XP Professional Edition on a clean system out of the box, and you're perplexed to find that none of the standard desktop icons are apparent. Which of the following methods can you use to put the My Computer, My Network Places, and My Documents icons back on the desktop? (Choose the best answer.)

  1. Right-click an empty area on the desktop. Select Properties, then select the Desktop tab. Click Customize Desktop. Make sure that the My Computer, My Documents, and My Network Places check boxes are selected.

  2. Double-click My Network Places. In the left panel, make sure that Other Places is expanded. Select the My Computer icon, and another window appears. In the left panel, click Control Panel and select Classic View. Open the Display applet. Go to the Desktop tab and click Customize Desktop. Make sure that the My Computer, My Documents, and Internet Explorer check boxes are selected.

  3. In Control Panel, select Classic View. Open the Display applet, select the Desktop tab, and click Customize Desktop. Make sure that the My Computer, My Documents, and Internet Explorer check boxes are selected.

  4. Right-click the Start menu and select Properties. Go to the Desktop tab and select the My Computer, My Network Places, and My Documents check boxes

  5. From the Start menu, select Settings, then select Taskbar and Start Menu. Go to the Taskbar tab and clear the "Hide inactive icons" check box.
