Troubleshooter: Using LDAP to Access Exchange 2000
Exchange 2000 doesn’t require you to install LDAP to let LDAP clients view the Exchange server.
April 20, 2003
Although I've installed Exchange 2000 Server, Standard Edition, I can't use Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) to access the Exchange server. How can I install LDAP?
You don't need to install LDAP—Windows 2000 is responsible for LDAP traffic. Active Directory (AD) acts as the LDAP server on domain controllers (DCs)—member servers can't answer LDAP queries. In Exchange Server 5.5, LDAP was a separate protocol that you had to install to allow LDAP access to the Exchange 5.5 organization directory. However, in Exchange 2000, AD always provides LDAP access, so LDAP clients can see the same directory information that Exchange clients use.
