Q: I'm having a lot oftrouble allowing folk access to PowerPoint clip art unless they log on to thesystem either as a local user or as an administrator on the domain. Both choicesare unacceptable. What can I do?

PowerPoint seems to beunable to deal with domain users. Therefore, you will need to modify permissionsin the Windows NT Registry. Run regedt32 and go toKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE|Software|Microsoft|ClipArt Gallery|2.0. With 2.0 highlighted, click on Security and then Permissions and give Full Control to Everyone forthis key (2.0) and the three subkeys by checking "Replace permissions onsubkeys." Alternatively, you can give everyone permission to change thefile.artgalry.cag in the WINNT35 subdirectory. (They need read/writepermission.)

Q: As an old UNIX user, Iam used to the various shells available. Have these been ported to NT yet?

Yes, several shells arealready available for NT.

1. The shell in the Windows NT Resource Kit POSIX Utilities ispdksh, and you can download it fromftp://ftp.microsoft.com/bussys/winnt/winnt-public/reskit/.

2. Cygnus has a beta version--in decent, but fairly rough shape--of its portof the GNU utilities to Win32, which includes the bash shell, atftp://ftp.cygnus.com/pub/sac/.

3. The commercial Hamilton C Shell is, as its name implies, a csh port.

Q: I added a new deviceto my system, but NT doesn't save the configuration. Why not?

When you add a device orservice and Windows NT reverts to the previous configuration, the reason isusually an OEM Award 4.50G BIOS. If this is the case, try updating the BIOS tothe latest version from the motherboard manufacturer. You can also try disablingdaylight-saving time in the CMOS, setting DMACLOCK to SCLK-2, PRQ2detection toenabled, and IDEHDD-blockmode to disabled.

Q: I want to move my NTinstallation from the C drive to the D drive. How can I edit the Registry forthis purpose, do blanket searches, and so on?

You'll find a search andreplace utility on the Internet and several bulletin board systems (BBSs). Thelast place I saw it (regsrch.zip) was on 704-588-2669, which is a free BBS.

Q: As you know, NT has noprovisions to mirror drives across a network. This situation is awkward for usbecause we need real-time mirroring over a network. Can we do it?

I've been using Octopusfor some time. It works well and lets me mirror transparently and in real-timewithin the same system or to any NT nodes on a network anywhere in the world. The latest version also provides an automatic switch-over capability.

Q: Can you make a bootfloppy for NT that lets you access mirrored drives and perform other functions? Please help! I'm desperate.

To create an NTFS bootfloppy:

1. Diskcopy the first Setup disk.

2. Delete all the files on this boot floppy.

3. Copy ntdetect.com from your root directory to the boot floppy.

4. Copy ntldr from your root directory to the boot floppy. Rename it setupldr.bin.

5. Copy the SCSI driver from your system32drivers directory to ntbootdd.syson the boot floppy.

6. Create a boot.ini file as follows. Spacing is important.

[boot loader]

timeout=10

default=scsi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition (1)WINNT35

[operating systems]

scsi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition (1)WINNT35="Windows NT Server Version3.5"

Note: WINNT35 is the Windows directory.

Q: I understand that somenew printer drivers are available for NT 3.51. Can you give me more information?

All the printer drivers intable 1 are available for NT 3.51 with Service Pack 3 (or higher). You candownload any of these self-extracting files from the following services.

On CompuServe:

1. Enter GO MSL

2. Search for or S

3. Display the results and download

On the Microsoft Download Service (MSDL):

1. Dial 206-936-6735 to connect to MSDL

2. Download

On the Internet (anonymous ftp):

1. Go to ftp://ftp.microsoft.com

2. Change to the SOFTLIB/MSLFILES directory

3. Get

On the Microsoft Network:

1. On the Edit menu, click Go To, and then click Other Location

2. Type mssupport

3. Double-click on the Microsoft Software Library icon

4. Find the appropriate product area

5. Download

Download the file into a temporary directory and run the self-extracting.exe file. This file contains all the files necessary to support the device. Thetext file in the extracted files contains all the information necessary toinstall the driver.

Q: How much space does NT3.51 actually require? I need to know so that I can plan for the upgrade onthree servers.

NT 3.51 requires 92MBminimum of free disk space on the partition that will contain NT system files.

Q: I have a site that hasrecently upgraded the cable plant to FDDI/UTP. The Novell NetWare servers arerunning 3Com FDDI NICs. If I configure the servers to run a packet size of 4202,NT Workstation 3.51 will not properly execute a read-only file from the NetWareservers. However, if the packet size is 1514, NT 3.51 works fine. NT 3.5 doesn'thave this problem. I really need to run 4202 packet size on the NetWare servers.Do you know of any configuration issues for NT 3.51 that address this need?

Use regedt32, setDefaultMaxPacketSize to 1012 atHKEY_LOCAL_MACHINEsystemcurrentcontrolsetserviceswrdrparameters.

Q: Can I shut down aserver from a remote site? This capability is important for our distributedLANs.

You can use AT withShutdown to automate rebooting every week. The shutdown.exe (Windows NTResource

Kit utility) command-line utility lets you remotely shut down aserver. The syntax of this command is

shutdown [/?] [\Computername] [/L] [/A] [/R] [/T:xx] ["Msg"] [/Y][/C]

The following explains the options:

\Computername Specifies a remote computer to shut down

/LSpecifies a local shutdown

/AAborts a system shutdown(this option is possible only during the time-outperiod. If you use this switch, all others are ignored)

/RSpecifies that the machine reboot after shutdown

/T:xxSets the timer for system shutdown in xx seconds; the default is 20seconds

"Msg"Specifies an additional message

/YSets the answer to all following questions to yes

/CForces running applications to close

For the AT syntax, type AT/? at the command prompt. You can also use WINATfrom Windows NT Resource Kit.

Q: How in the world can Ido a winpopup message in NT? This problem is driving me nuts. Themessage works perfectly in Windows for Workgroups but not in NT.

NetSend is the equivalentcommand in NT for winpopup. NetSend sends messages to other users, computers, ormessaging names on the network. The Messenger service must be running for usersto receive messages.

net send {name | * | /domain[:name] | /users} message

The following list describes the parameters of netsend:

nameIs the username, computer name, or messaging name to send the messageto; if name is a com-puter name that contains blank characters, enclose thealias in quotation marks

*Sends the message to all the names in your group

/domain[:name] Sends the message to all the names in the computer's domain; If name is specified, the message goes to all the names in the specified domainor workgroup

/usersSends the message to all users connected to the server

messageIs the text to be sent as a message

Q: I have installedWindows NT Workstation on an IBM ThinkPad 755CD, and for some reason, theThinkPad utilities still placed the Fuelwin program (battery monitor) in atstartup. I get the message, "Cannot find load Fuelwin or one of itscomponents...."

With NT, some 16-bitWindows-based applications can write specific executable instructions to theRun= and Load= lines in the win.ini file. NT translates these entries intoRegistry entries. If an application has been deleted from the system, information about the program can still be in the Registry.

To eliminate this error message, try using regedt32.exe to remove thefollowing values from the Registry:

HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindows NTCurrentVersionWindows

load :REG_SZ :

run :REG_SZ :

Q: Where can I find thelatest Hardware Compatibility List (HCL) for NT?

You can find the HCL at ftp://ftp.microsoft.com inbussys/winnt/winnt-docs/hcl/hcl351/

Q: We have a ToshibaXM-3401B CD-ROM drive running under NT 3.51. The drive works fine with regularCD-ROMs, but we are having a problem with the Photo-CD/Multimedia CD-ROMs.

Toshiba Europe wrote aspecial driver for the 3401. It's available on CompuServe in the NTWORK forumlibraries.

Q: I have severalimportant suggestions to pass on to Microsoft. These involve requests forenhancements to NT. Where should I send them?

If you have a long-termsolution, I suggest you send an email requesting the enhancement [email protected].

Q: Do you have anyexperience with firewalls on Windows NT? I am looking for one and wouldappreciate any comments or suggestions.

Raptor has an NT offering.Try http://www.raptor.com.

Q: What server tools canI place on a workstation?

You can install thefollowing Windows NT Server tools on an NT Workstation:

1. Server Manager

2. User Manager for Domains

3. Remote Access Administrator

4. User Profile Editor

5. Remote Boot Manager

6. Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) Manager

7. Windows Internet Name Service (WINS) Manager

You can install these tools by running the setup.bat file in theCLIENTSSRVTOOLSWINNT location on the NT 3.5 or 3.51 Server CD.

You have to create a group and add the files individually. The install doesnot automatically create a program group.
