Q: I'm using Rights Management Services templates with my Office 2013 installation, but I'm not seeing the latest templates in Office. What can I do?

A: First, make sure your client operating system has the latest Rights Management Services (RMS) templates, which can be done by triggering the scheduled task that typically checks for updated templates:

  1. Open the Control Panel Task Scheduler applet.

  2. Navigate to Task Scheduler LibraryMicrosoftWindowsActive Directory Rights Management Services Client.

  3. Select the AD RMS Rights Policy Template Management (Manual) task, and select Run from the Actions menu.

To check that the machine has the new templates, you can view the local template cache, which can be found in the folder C:UsersAppDataLocalMicrosoftDRMTemplates. The next step it to make Office check with the operating system for templates, which is accomplished by removing a registry key. Open the registry editor and navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareClassesLocal SettingsSoftwareMicrosoftMSIPC, then delete the Template key. Launch Office; your new RMS templates should now be visible.

My instructions assume that RMS is configured correctly in your environment—for example, ensuring that HTTP and HTTPS exceptions are enabled on the RMS server and that the Service Connection Point (SCP) is correctly published to the Active Directory forest's Configuration partition (CN=Configuration [], CN=Services, CN=RightsManagementServices, CN=SCP).
