CES 2017: Hands On with 3Glasses Virtual Reality Head Mounted Device - Blubur S1
One of my favorite booth visits during CES earlier this month was with the folks from 3Glasses.
They are one of the manufacturers that Microsoft announced as a virtual reality partner back in December at WinHEC when they unveiled Project Evo and a series of head mounted VR displays that will be supported when the Creators Update and its 3D For Everyone theme arrives in April as the next major update for Windows 10.
I met with the companies Chief Operating Officer, Philip Kong, to discuss the headset and the partnership with Microsoft and then I got to try out the Blubur S1 HMD with one of their demo games so that I could use the new 3Wand Controller Suite.

3Glasses is the only Chinese company Microsoft has chosen to team up with for Windows Holographic in the Windows 10 Creators Update.
The Blubur S1 has a 2K resolution of 2880 x 1440 pixels with a refresh rate of 120Hz (maximum) and those pixels are laid out at 704 PPI with a response time of less than 10 milliseconds.
The headset provides a 110 degrees field of view and has integrated stereo headphones and weighs just 358 grams (12.6 ounces).
Even with my very large head, I was able to get the headset adjusted and in a comfortable position for the demo. I normally wear glasses for reading and distance viewing however, I did not wear my glasses and was able to see very clearly as I used the device.
The 3Wand Controller Suite consists of two hand held controllers and a camera so that your hand motions can be detected and translated into the virtual world. In the game demo I played, one hand was a shield and the other was my weapon. It was very easy to acclimate and use them naturally.
The experience in the headset and playing the game was smooth and I did not experience any motion sickness which I can be prone to at times with VR headsets. Shortly after jumping into the demo I was apparently ducking and dodging the shots from the alien attacks. You really do get engaged in the virtual environment very quickly and I am glad they did not video tape me in action!
The Blubur S1 will retail for $449 for just the HMD and at the time of my visit no information was available concerning the pricing of the 3Wand Controller Suite. Once I have any updated pricing information I will update this article.
