The power distribution unit (PDU) market generated $209.2 million in revenues in 2005, according to a report from Frost & Sullivan, which predicts that PDU sales will record a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 12.5 percent until 2012. A PDU distributes electric power by taking high voltage and amperage and reducing it to more common and useful levels. The growth in the rack mount PDU market is likely to double when compared to that of the non-rack mount PDU market, primarily due to the increase in data center applications, which are used in sectors such as IT infrastructure, telecom, finance and banking. Rack mount PDU, with the ability to offer multiple outputs and serve end-user applications more effectively, is popular among the data centers/server farms, explains the analyst of this research service. In fact, IT infrastructure contributed about 40.8 percent of rack mount PDU sales in 2005.
