Just weeks after Facebook announced a new data center in Oregon, the state is about to get another large project. Mission West Properties (MSW) and CDH Consulting today  announced that its new data center project in Ontario, Oregon is now available for development. The site will support a single mission-critical data center facility up to 300,000 square feet, or can allow for three or four smaller data center projects, the developers said.

Mission West said late last year that it would focus on data center development, with an initial focus on several projects in Oregon.

"With demand for cloud computing rising, we believe the need for mission-critical data center space will grow rapidly in the next two to three years," said Carl Berg, CEO, Mission West Properties. "For prospective tenants, the Mission West/CDH Consulting property in Ontario, Oregon will provide outstanding economic development incentives, low power costs and the ability to design and build a facility to suit specific needs.”

CDH has proposed a design (PDF)for a 143,000 square foot data center, which can be expanded to 286,000 square feet. The design would use evaporative HVAC systems to support a Power Usage effectiveness (PUE) rating of approximately 1.4. Fiber connectivity will be available through a fiber build from Syringa Networks, an Idaho provider that will build across the Oregon border to server the Ontario project site.

The site in Ontario features power costs of between 3 and 4 cents per kilowatt hour, with a 62 MVA on-site power sub station. Incentives include a 20-year real estate tax abatement (which would be worth $22.4 million based on a $150 million data center facility), a credit equal to 62.5 percent of gross payroll to defray the state corporate excise (income) tax liability, and states sales tax.

Mission West owns more than 100 properties totaling almost 8 million square feet, with major tenants including Apple and Microsoft. CDH, which is headed by industry veteran Chris Hardin, is partnering with Mission West on the project.
