FAQs
Q. How can I enable the new Microsoft Management Console (MMC) 3.0 feature set in Windows Server 2003 R2?
A. By default, Windows 2003 R2 uses the old MMC 2.0-style UI with the old snap-in dialog box and no Action pane. To enable the new features and interface, perform these steps:
Start the registry editor (regedit.exe).
Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftMMC.
From the Edit menu, select New, Key.
Enter a name of UseNewUI and press Enter.
Close the registry editor.
Q. Does Windows XP come with an onscreen keyboard?
A. A. Yes, go to Start, Programs, Accessories, Accessibility to find the "On-Screen Keyboard" utility (osk.exe). The figureshows an example of the keyboard. I discovered this handy feature after dislocating my elbow a few days ago!
Q. Does Windows XP include voice-recognition capabilities?
A. A. XP doesn't include a voice-recognition component. You can purchase third-party solutions that enable voice command and voice dictation into the OS and other applications (e.g., Microsoft Word).
Popular voice-recognition products include Nuance Communications Dragon NaturallySpeaking (http://www.nuance.com/naturallyspeaking ) and IBM viaVoice (http://www.nuance.com/viavoice ). Most powerful voice-recognition products include an element of training in which the user reads sample paragraphs of text to allow the computer to fine tune the recognition to the user specific accent. If you've previously used voice-recognition software, the new products require far less training and are far more accurate. I wrote this FAQ by dictating to Dragon NaturallySpeaking and had to make only one correction after the 5 minutes of training (even with my British accent).
Q. How can I clear the cache from Microsoft Internet Explorer (IE)?
A. Microsoft has released a utility, which you can download here ,that deletes all temporary Internet files, cookies, and history files. After you download and run the files, click Next to the wizard's Welcome page. On the next screen, select "I Agree" and click Next. This program was initially intended to clear the cache in an error scenario, particularly around corrupt entries.
In IE 7.0, this functionality will be available under Tools, Delete Browsing History, with granular options that include deleting just cookies, files, history, form data, and passwords or deleting everything.
Q. Are any tools available to assist with migrating printers from one server to another?
A. Microsoft has released the Windows Print Migrator tool. You can download Windows Print Migrator 3.1 here. The tool lets you easily migrate printers and printer shares between Windows-based servers.
