EMC announced that it has acquired of RSA Security and Network Intelligence. Together the three entities will form a new security division at EMC. The purchase price for RSA Security totaled approximately $2.1 billion, and Network Intelligence cost EMC about $175 million.
The new security division will operate under the RSA brand and will be headquartered in Bedford, Massachusetts and RSA's existing products and services will be maintained. Former chief executive officer at RSA Security, Art Coviello, will lead the division as president and will also serve as an executive vice president at EMC. Network Intelligence will become a business unit of the new division.
"Information security continues to dominate the spending intentions of CIO's around the world. The battlefront in security has quickly shifted from securing the network perimeter to protecting and securing the information itself -- wherever that information lives and wherever it moves," said Joe Tucci, EMC's chairman, president and CEO.
The acquisitions expand EMC's security offerings to a five layer approach that include the ability to assess risk, control resource access, secure the network infrastructure, assure data confidentiality and integrity, and ensure compliance. Network Intelligence's tools help businesses collect, monitor, analyze and report on security event-related activity across the network, in applications, on desktops, in storage devices, on mainframes, and more. Overall the solutions help prove compliance with security policies and regulations. RSA's tools bring EMC enterprise-level identity and access management, consumer identity and fraud protection solutions, as well as encryption and key management software.
