Phase 1: Send Phase
In the first phase, once the SMS Scheduler wakes from its polling interval,SMS checks the SQL database for job requests. If the job's Start After time haselapsed, SMS will mark the job active and start processing. SMS sends thepackage to the sites that contain workstations and servers that have beentargeted for package distribution. In this phase, the SMS Scheduler compressesthe entire package and all subdirectories, and the SMS Sender copies the packageto the child site or sites. At the target sites, the Despooler decompresses thepackage into a temporary directory on the Site Server disk drive with thelargest amount of free space. In the SMS Job Details window, the Send Phase,Send Package to Target Sites option controls this phase.

Phase 2: Distribute Phase
The second phase is the Distribute Phase. In this phase the SMS Despoolercopies the package from the temporary directory on the Site Server to theDistribute Server or servers SMS_PKGx share. SMS reports the package locationback to the parent site and stores the information to enable a subsequent RemovePackage job to delete the package on all distribution servers. The Site Servercan also be a Distribute Server, but the operation is the same.

Phase 3: Run Phase
The third phase is the Run Phase. In this phase, the SMS Despooler createsPackage Command Manager (PCM) definition files in the site.srvmancfg.
boxpcmdom.boxdomain_name.000 directories on the site server. SMS creates onePCM file for each target workstation and uses the SMS ID of the targetworkstation to name it. SMS copies these PCM files to the site.srvpcins.boxdirectories on all SMS Logon Servers within the SMS site. When a user logs on orwhen the PCM's polling interval expires, the PCM checks the logon.srvpcins.boxdirectories of the logon server it is using and displays the job in the clientwindow if the Offer After time has expired.
