When you receive a STOP 0x0000007F (0x00000008, 0x00000000, 0x00000000, 0x00000000) UNEXPECTED_KERNEL_MODE_TRAP Blue Screen Of Death (BSOD), the first parameter, 0x00000008, indicates a double-fault exception due to a single-bit error in the upper half of a processor's ESP register.

This condition can occur if a processor:

  • Requires a microcode update that is not applied by the computer's BIOS.

  • Is damaged, defective, or broken.

  • Is running outside the environmental specs for power, temperature, humidity, dust, etc..

To troubleshoot this issue, see the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article:

Stop 7F, 0x00000008 (double-fault) error occurs because of a single-bit error in the ESP register.
