JSI Tip 5585. 'The Background Intelligent Transfer Service service terminated with service-specific error 2147944102'?

If you install the Automatic Updates version 2.2 client on a Windows 2000-based server, that has Terminal Services installed but Disabled, the Background Intelligent Transfer Service will NOT start and will NOT download any jobs. Your System event log will contain:

Event Type: Error
Event Source: Service Control Manager
Event Category: None
Event ID: 7024
User: N/A
Description: The Background Intelligent Transfer Service service terminated with service-specific error 2147944102.

If you try to manually start the the Background Intelligent Transfer Service, you receive:

Windows could not start the Background Intelligent Transfer Service on Local Computer. For more information, review the System Even Log. If this is a non-Microsoft service, contact the service vendor, and refer to service-specific error code -2147023194.

To resolve this problem, perform one of the following actions:

- If you are NOT using Terminal Services, uninstall Terminal Services.

- If you do use Terminal Services, set the "Terminal Services" Startup type to Automatic.
