How often does Recipient Update Service (RUS) run?
March 26, 2006
A. By default, RUS is configured to "Always Run," which means that each minute, after the RUS wakes up it communicates with a domain controller (DC) and looks for objects that require attention. Alternatively, you can configure a schedule at hourly or 15-minute levels of granularity, specifying when the RUS should run. To configure an update interval configuration on a RUS instance, perform the following steps:
Start the Microsoft Management Consoled (MMC) Exchange System Manager (ESM) snap-in (Start, Programs, Microsoft Exchange, System Manager).
Navigate to Recipients, Recipient Update Services.
Right-click the RUS instance you want to modify the schedule for and select Properties from the displayed context menu.
Select the General tab and click the drop down button under "Update interval," as the figure at figure shows. You'll notice default options to
Always run
Run every hour
Run every 2 hours
Run every 4 hours
Never run
Use custom schedule
If you select "custom schedule," you'll be able to set updates for 15 minute intervals for specific hours. For example, you could configure RUS to run every 15 minutes from 9 A.M. to 5 P.M., then run only every 2 hours for all other hours. (The interval of execution is stored in the activationSchedule attribute, and the activationType is set to 1 instead of the default 2, which is "always run.")
Click OK.
If you configure an update interval other than "Always run" you can force RUS to run by right-clicking the RUS instance and selecting "Update Now" (which updates the msExchReplicateNow value of the RUS object to TRUE instead of the default FALSE). This option instructs RUS to ignore its schedule and perform an update when it next wakes up. If you select Rebuild, you'll be warned that it might take some time (the msExchDoFullReplication is set to TRUE for a full rebuild) as every object will be rechecked and updated.
