Celebrating Microsoft SQL Server 2014: Plenty for DBAs to Get Excited About

At a customer event in San Francisco today, Microsoft celebrated the release of SQL Server 2014 and shared its broader set of plans for its data strategy. And although the company focused a great deal on its efforts to make data accessible to every organization and to every individual, there's still a lot for database professionals to be excited about.

In particular, Microsoft touted SQL Server 2014's new in-memory OLTP engine, which means that all workloads can take advantage of spectacular performance improvements for their applications in throughput and latency. Additionally, SQL Server's relationship database can now handle data warehouse workloads in terabytes to petabyte scale, thanks to in-memory columnar data management.
