Understand the Planned Virtual Machine folder on a Hyper-V server

Q. I have a Planned Virtual Machines folder on my Hyper-V server, what is it used for?

A. The Hyper-V WMI v2 uses a two-stage process to import VMs. The import is planned then actually realized and the Planned Virtual Machines folder is used for the first phase of the import. The two-phase import approach using WMI is documented at http://blogs.msdn.com/b/taylorb/archive/2014/03/12/importing-vms-utilizing-the-hyper-v-wmi-v2-namespace.aspx.
