Microsoft has posted a fantastic video that nicely explains the design philosophy behind Windows Phone. Unlike its competition, the creation of Windows Phone was guided by good design principles, and the results show in the final product.

The video is called Windows Phone Design 101 and you can find it on Microsoft’s Channel 9 web site. It’s hosted by Microsoft UX designer and developer Jared Potter.

“Windows Phone Design 101 covers the philosophy, inspiration and visuals that are Windows Phone Design Language,” the video description notes. “Starting with the basic terminology of design, this boot camp will take you from its early origins to the Design Principles each screen in Windows Phone was measured against. From there, we will show you the design process that guided its creation. Lastly, we will discuss the larger Microsoft Design ecosystem including Windows 8.”

Check it out. It’s only 10 minutes long, and well worth your time.
