SYMPTOMS

When you update the drivers for your SCSI controller from the Windows Update Web site, you may receive a Stop error (a "blue screen" error message) that is similar to the following when you restart the computer:
*** STOP: 0x0000007B (0xF201B848, 0xC0000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)
INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE

CAUSE

This issue may occur when you update the SCSI controller drivers for the PERC2 RAID array controller on a Dell PowerEdge 2450 server, and either for the following is true:

  • You do not update the firmware on the PERC2 RAID arraycontroller before you install the SCSI driver from the Windows Updatesite.-or-

  • The Afamgt "Fast Utility" upperfilter driver is loaded inthe Windows registry.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, use the following methods in the order that they are presented. Continue to Method 2 only if Method 1 is does not resolve the issue, and continue to Method 3 only if Method 2 does not resolve the issue.

Method 1: Replace the Perc2.sys Driver File

Replace the updated Perc2.sys driver file with the correct version for the firmware level of your SCSI RAID controller. To do so:

Note: If you have previously updated the firmware of your RAID controller, obtain the correct version of the Perc2.sys driver from Dell. You cannot use the version of the file that is included with the OpenManage CD that was included with the computer equipment. To obtain the correct version of the Perc2.sys file, contact Dell or download it from the following Dell FTP site:
ftp://ftp.dell.com/scsi-raid/

  1. Use the Windows 2000 CD-ROM to start the computer, and thenpress F6 to install a third-party SCSI or RAID driver.

  2. Press S to specify an additional device, and then insertthe floppy disk that contains the correct driver for the firmware revision thatyour PERC2 RAID controller has installed.

  3. Press R to repair a Windows 2000 installation.

  4. Press C to use the recovery console.

  5. Log on to the Windows installation that you want, and thentype the Administrator password.

  6. Type chdir system32drivers, andthen press ENTER.

  7. Rename the Perc2.sys driver file dated 10.29.01. To do so,type ren perc2.sys perc2.old, and then press ENTER

  8. Copy the correct version of the Perc2.sys file from thefloppy disk to the WinntSystem32Drivers folder. To do so, typecopy a:perc2.sys, and then press ENTER.

  9. Type exit to quit the recoveryconsole and restart the computer. Start Windows as you ordinarilydo.

If Windows does not start successfully, go to Method 2:

Method 2: Remove the Afamgt Filter Driver

Remove the Afamgt filter driver from the Windows registry. To do so, follow these steps:

WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

  1. Perform a parallel installation of Windows. For additional information about how to do this, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

  2. From the new installation of Windows, start RegistryEditor, and then locate the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE key.

  3. On the Registry menu, click LoadHive.

  4. Locate the SystemRootSystem32Config folder of the original Windows installation, click theSystem file, and then click Open.

  5. In the Load Hive box, typetest, and then click OK. The originalWindows installation HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE hive is loaded as a subkey of the current HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE registry key.

  6. Delete the AFAMGT data item from theUpperFilters value in the following registry location of theloaded registry hive:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINEtestControlSet001ControlClass\{4D36E967-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}.
    Value: UpperFilters
    Data:AFAMGT

  7. Unload the registry hive. To do so, click thetest key, and then click Unload Hive on theRegistry menu. Click Yes to confirm theunloading of the test registry key and all itssubkeys.

  8. Quit Registry Editor, and then restart the computer to theoriginal Windows installation.

If Windows does not start successfully, go to Method 3:

Method 3: Update the RAID Controller Firmware

Update the firmware of the RAID controller to the latest revision. For information about how to update the firmware, see the documentation that was included with the device, or contact Dell.
