VMworld 2012: Veeam Explorer for SAN Snapshots

On the second day of VMworld 2012 I met with Ratmir Timashev President and CEO of Veeam Sotware. Veeam is primary known for their market leading Veeam Backup & Replication product which started in the VMware space. Last December Veeam expanded it to support Microsoft Hyper-V as well. Interestingly, Ratmir has a long history with Windows IT Pro and while working with a former employer he took part in a network hack challenge with Windows NT Magazine (our former incarnation) uncovering several network vulnerabilities in our labs at the time.

Now leading Veeam, Ratmir shared with me some of Veeam’s latest developments with their flagship Veeam Backup & Replication  6.1 product.

The next release of Veeam Backup and Replication will contain a feature call Veeam Explorer for SAN Snapshots. The new Veeam Explorer for SAN Snapshots makes it easy to use SAN snaphots to restore entire VMs or select files from the snapshot. Initially, it will only support HP Lefthand SANs but support for other storage systems is planned. Veeam Explorer for SAN will be included in the next version of Veeam Backup & Replication 6.5 which is scheduled to be available in October.
